Advanced Automotive Technician (EV & Prototype Support)


Location: Newark, CA

Duration: 2 to 3 month contract (extension possible based on customer demand)

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (flexibility to support weekends as needed)

Compensation: $26 to 35/hour

Openings: 2 positions

 

Position Summary

The Advanced Automotive Technician is responsible for performing inspection, diagnostic, repair, and testing activities on automotive systems in support of engineering, development, and production teams. This role focuses on troubleshooting complex mechanical and electrical issues, performing repairs to OEM standards, and supporting prototype and pre-production vehicle programs.

This position supports the same customer program as the Test Driver team and requires the same motor vehicle record (MVR) standards. Technicians may work on production vehicles, prototype systems, and test benches in a manufacturing or engineering environment while collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve vehicle performance, reliability, and serviceability.

Candidates with electric vehicle (EV) experience are strongly preferred, though strong traditional automotive backgrounds will be considered.

 

Key Responsibilities

Vehicle Diagnostics & Repair

  • Perform complex repairs and execute repair orders in accordance with OEM and company standards
  • Diagnose and repair vehicle systems including:
  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Electrical systems
  • Steering and suspension
  • Brake systems
  • HVAC / air conditioning
  • Determine required repair activities and perform component replacement
  • Conduct inspections and testing of new or development vehicles and document findings
  • Maintain and repair vehicles and associated test bench systems

Prototype & Engineering Support

  • Support prototype, pre-production, show, and production vehicle builds
  • Fabricate or modify system and subsystem components alongside engineering teams
  • Build and assemble prototype vehicles and testing equipment
  • Apply critical thinking to troubleshoot issues beyond standard service procedures

Electrical & EV Systems

  • Maintain working knowledge of high-voltage and low-voltage EV systems
  • Interpret electrical schematics and assist with simple test board development
  • Utilize diagnostic tools and analyze CAN communication systems

Testing & Data Collection

  • Drive vehicles to evaluate system functionality and overall vehicle health
  • Collect development data and document system behavior
  • Follow structured diagnostic and testing processes

Documentation & Process Support

  • Document issues, repairs, and improvements using established systems
  • Assist in developing service manuals, maintenance procedures, and containment documentation
  • Communicate technical findings clearly to engineering teams and management

Collaboration & Team Support

  • Work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders when necessary
  • May lead small groups of technicians during specific tasks
  • Participate in ongoing technical training

 

Required Qualifications

  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License with clean driving record (MVR required)
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screening
  • Minimum 5 years of automotive repair experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Automotive technician degree, certification, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Experience using automotive diagnostic equipment and shop tools
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong technical and process-based problem-solving skills
  • Computer proficiency
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Must provide a personal professional automotive toolbox

 

Preferred / Advantageous Qualifications

  • Electric vehicle (EV) experience
  • ADAS diagnosis, repair, and calibration
  • Knowledge of CAN communication systems
  • Fabrication or machining experience (welding, milling, lathe)
  • Wire harness fabrication (soldering, crimping, splicing)
  • OEM Master Technician, ASE Certification, or EPA 609 Certification
  • Senior technician or team lead experience
  • Professional motorsports or race team experience

 

Required Personal Tools & Equipment

Technicians must provide most of the following professional-grade tools (not required to have every item, but should have the majority):

Core Hand Tools

  • Socket set (1/4", 3/8", 1/2" drive — metric & SAE)
  • Ratchets (3/8" and 1/2" minimum)
  • Combination wrench set (metric & SAE; ratcheting preferred)
  • Screwdriver set (Flathead, Phillips, Torx)
  • Allen/Hex key set (metric & SAE)
  • Pliers set: needle-nose, slip-joint, cutting, locking

Torque & Fastening Tools

  • Torque wrench (3/8" and 1/2" drive)
  • Breaker bar
  • Impact wrench (cordless or air-powered, typically 1/2" drive)

Diagnostic & Electrical Tools

  • OBD-II scanner (capable of reading codes and live data)
  • Multimeter
  • Test light
  • Wire strippers and crimpers

Specialty Automotive Tools

  • Spark plug socket (5/8" or 13/16" with rubber insert)
  • Oil filter wrench (various styles)
  • Pry bar set
  • Hammer (ball-peen, dead-blow, or mallet)

Shop Essentials

  • Flashlight or rechargeable LED work light

 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work performed in manufacturing and development environments, including assembly lines
  • Exposure to temperature changes, noise, and outdoor conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • May work at heights up to 20–25 feet
  • Regular standing, bending, and lifting during 8+ hour shifts
  • Occasional overtime, weekend work, or travel to company facilities or test locations
