Fluid Systems Engineer (Combat Vehicles)


Type of Position:

This position is a long-term contract role with no fixed end date. Conversion to a direct hire role may occur as early as 6 months, depending on individual performance and business needs. Although direct hire is not guaranteed, it is a common outcome for high-performing team members, and most contractors in this role do transition to permanent positions over time.


Candidate Requirements:

This role is ONLY open to US Citizens. Permanent Residents (Green Card Holders) and any other work authorizations are NOT permitted here as this role requires eligibility to obtain a secret clearance (a secret clearance is only open to US Citizens). Clearance isn’t required to start (but all candidates must be eligible to obtain one). Due to the nature of this role (working for a defense contractor tied to the federal government) – candidates may need to pass a drug screen (which would include cannabis). There would be no exceptions to this (eg: a medical card). 


Job Location:

Sterling Heights, MI (on-site role).

  

Compensation:

$50.00/hr to $65.00/hr (depending on experience) to start. Overtime is paid at 1.5x over 40 hours.

Overview:

HRU Technical Resources has partnered with a leading defense contractor to hire a Fluid Systems Engineer for our Sterling Heights, MI facility. This role is a part of our Mechanical Engineering team and is a technical position that will provide departmental leadership with a primary focus on fluid and distributed systems. The primary areas of focus will include hydraulic actuation and pneumatic systems, automatic fire suppression systems, fuel systems, camera cleaning systems, LRU cooling distribution, and winch and fairlead systems. The individual will provide technical oversight and leadership for projects, training, standardization of approaches, mentoring, peer reviews, and guidance when needed. This engineer will provide internal and external customer interface, technical management and organization for mechanical engineering teams within the department and apply engineering principles to generate designs that solve complex problems.


Responsibilities:

  • This position is responsible for the design of subsystems and components to meet vehicle performance requirements including human factors, safety, environmental, ballistic and mine blast requirements.
  • Conduct requirement decomposition, design, integration and analysis, and release of fluid and mechanical components, mechanisms, and shock attenuation systems.
  • Apply mechanics of materials, material selection, welding, and fabrication principles for mechanical components and complex welded brackets and mounting provisions.
  • Will support various projects by performing analysis & design, drawing mark-ups, tolerance stacks along with generating source data for engineering changes.
  • Responsible for writing material requests and shop work requests, track delivery and stock of parts, participate in integration reviews, fit checks, and write reports.
  • Provide engineering support during prototype, production vehicle builds, and sustainment.
  • Present design concepts, program status and issues/challenges to functional and program management in a clear, concise manner and in the context of risk management.
  • Conduct failure analysis, produce required corrective action, and troubleshoot and redesign activities and necessary.
  • Will be responsible for managing cross functional projects and leading complex tasks.
  • Will Work with different engineering functions of the organization on various programs.
  • Will work on the customer needs for the vehicle, formulate the subsystem and component requirements and meet contract expectations.
  • May occasionally be responsible for technical presentations to other engineering groups, the customer and/or leadership.
  • Preforms other duties as assigned.


Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electro-mechanical, or mechatronic engineering. Other degrees may be considered if relevant to the role, but a Bachelor’s Degree of some type is required.
  • We are seeking 10+ years of relevant experience (although we may consider slightly less experience for otherwise well-qualified candidates).
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical teams.
  • Demonstrated experience developing fluid system functional architecture, schematics, and analytical models and troubleshooting is required.
  • Solid modeling experience with NX and/or Creo.
  • Experience with Teamcenter and Vis Mockup.
  • Able to bring continuous improvement processes and methodologies to the position.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills is required.
  • Works well in a team environment and able to work independently.
  • This position may require the candidate to be able to climb on/off, work in, and work around military vehicles. Must be able to pass ASR test (Anthropometric Size Requirement for confined space).
  • Candidates must be eligible to obtain a Secret Security clearance. Secret Clearance requires US Citizenship.


Preferred:

  • Previous experience working on ground combat vehicles desired.


Work Environment:

  • This is generally a standard 1st (day) shift role. There may be occasional overtime as needed (any OT is paid at 1.5x). There may be occasional weekend work as needed (but this won’t be common).
  • Travel as required to other facilities or military installations to support integration and testing may be required on occasion (but this won’t be frequent).
  • Offer may be contingent upon a drug screen (which would include cannabis) and a background check. 
  • This position may require the candidate to be able to climb on/off, work in, and work around military vehicles. Must be able to pass ASR test (Anthropometric Size Requirement for confined space).
