Paint Process Engineer
Summary
The Paint Process Engineer supports the continuous improvement, reliability, and performance of paint operations within the assembly plant. This role focuses on pretreatment systems, chemical processes, paint quality, robotics functionality, and optimization of equipment and workflow. The engineer ensures all processes meet safety, quality, environmental, and production standards while driving innovation and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Process & Equipment Engineering
- Develop, evaluate, and improve paint, pretreatment, and chemical application processes.
- Analyze tooling, equipment, and process performance; determine corrective actions and implement solutions.
- Propose process changes or new equipment to enhance throughput, consistency, and quality.
- Ensure adherence to safety, environmental, and quality requirements across all paint operations.
Paint & Pretreatment Systems
- Manage and optimize pretreatment and paint chemical systems to ensure proper performance and compliance.
- Monitor bath chemistry, rinse stages, oven operations, and associated variables to reduce defects and improve stability.
- Partner with chemical suppliers to validate processes and maintain documentation.
Robotics & Automation
- Oversee and maintain Fanuc robotic paint application systems (approximately 100 robots).
- Troubleshoot robotic paths, spray patterns, and application parameters to improve consistency and reduce rework.
- Coordinate maintenance activities to minimize downtime and ensure robust system performance.
Production Support & Collaboration
- Work closely with production, maintenance, and quality teams to ensure daily operational objectives are met.
- Provide technical guidance, training, and hands-on support across the paint department.
- Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and external vendors to resolve issues and implement improvements.
Leadership & Team Support
- Lead and support a team of 5–10 employees within the paint department.
- Drive SPQRC (Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost) performance and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist in documentation, root-cause analysis, and corrective/preventive action development.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree preferred. High School Diploma Required
- Strong understanding of automotive paint processes, pretreatment chemistry, and application systems.
- Experience with Fanuc robotics and automated paint equipment.
- Ability to analyze complex systems, manage multiple projects, and work independently.
- Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
- Basic understanding of tooling, manufacturing systems, and quality systems (QS9000/ISO14001/GMS).
- Proficiency with MS Office tools.
